arr. Carlotta Ferrari
Gaudete! Christus est natus ex Maria virgine.
Deus homo facts est, natura mirante,

In the Bleak Midwinter
Robin Stopford
Text: Christina Rossetti
In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan,
Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone;
Snow had fallen snow on snow, snow on snow,
In the bleak midwinter long ago.
Our God, heaven cannot hold Him, nor earth sustain,
Heaven and earth shall flee away, when He comes to reign.
In the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed
The Lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ.
Enough for Him, whom cherubim, worship night and day,
a breastful of milk and a manger full of hay.
Enough for Him, whom angels fall down before
the ox and ass and camel which adore.
What can I bring Him, poor as I am,
If I were a shepherd I would bring a lamb.
If I were a wise man, I would do my part,
yet what I can I give him, Give my heart.

Ding Dong! Merrily on High
arr. David Blackwell
Text: George Ratcliffe Woodward
Ding Dong! merrily on high in heaven the bells are ringing:
Ding Dong! verily the sky is riven with angel singing.
Refrain: Gloria, hosanna in excelsis!
Even so here below, below, let steeple bells be swungen,
and io, io, io, by priest and people sungen. Refrain
Pray you, dutifully prime your matin chime, ye ringers;
May you beautifully rime your eve time song, ye singers. Refrain

Masters in This Hall
arr. David Willcocks
Text: William Morris
Masters in this hall, hear ye news today
Brought from over sea, and ever I you pray:
Refrain: Noel sing we clear! Holpen are all folk on earth, born is God's Son so dear.
Going over the hills, though the milk-white snow,
Heard I ewes bleat while the wind did blow.
Shepherds many an one sat among the sheep,
No man spake more work than they had been asleep. Refrain
Quoth I, 'fellows mine, why this guise sit ye?
Making but dull cheer, shepherd though ye be?'
'Shepherds should of right leap and dance and sing,
This to see ye sit, is a right strange thing': Refrain
Quoth these fellows then, 'To Belthlem town we go,
to see a mighty lord Lie in manger low': Refrain
'How name ye this lord, shepherds?' then said I,
'Very God,' they said, 'Come from heaven high': Refrain
This is Christ the Lord, masters, be ye glad!
Christmas is come in, and no folk should be sad: Refrain

Away in a Manger
arr. Mack Wilberg
Oboe: Ruth Denton; Flute: Charmaine Bacon; Piano; Stuart Sladden
Away in a manger, no crib for a bed,
the little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head.
The stars in the bright sky looked down where He lay,
the little Lord Jesus, a sleep on the hay.
The cattle are lowing, the Baby awakes,
but little Lord Jesus, no crying he makes.
I love Thee, Lord Jesus, look down from the sky,
and stay by my cradle till morning is nigh.
Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask Thee to stay
close by me forever, and love me, I pray.
Bless all the dear children in Thy tender care,
and fit us for Heaven to live with Thee there.

No. 2 - As Joseph was A-Walking
Text: Anonymous
As Joseph was a walking, he heard an angel sing:
This night shall be the birthright of Christ, the heavenly King.
His birth-bed shall be neither in housen nor in hall, nor in the place of Paradise,
But in the oxen's stall. He neither shall be clothed in purple nor in pall, but in fair white linen that usen babies all.
He neither shall be rocked in sliver nor in gold, but in a wooden cradle that rocks upon the mold.
As Joseph was a walking He heard an angel sing: This night shall be the birth night of Christ the heavenly King.
No. 3 - The Shepherds
Text: John Cowley
In winter when the wind blew chill upon the darkest night,
The shepherds watched upon the hill and saw a heavenly light.
Because they had a listening ear lest any lamb should cry,
they heard with joy the glorious song of angels in the sky.
May we like watchful shepherds be awake the whole night long.
May we behold the Christmas star and hear the angels' song.
No. 4 - The Angels
Text: Based on Like 2: 11-12, 14
Glory in the highest.
Alleluia, peace on earth goodwill to all
For unto you is born this day in the city of David,
a Saviour which is Christ the Lord.
Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes,
and lying in a manger.
No. 5 - The Three Kings
Text: John Cowley
Three Kings are we, from Orient land.
We travel through the night, while overhead,
to guide our path, a star is shining bright.
We seek a babe who shall be born, a prince of Jesse's stem,
a birth foretold by men of old, in Bethlehem.
Three kings are we, and yet we seek a King more great by far.
For him we tread through dark and night, led onward by a star.
To him we bear our gifts of gold and every precious gem.
Our homage we would pay to him, in Bethlehem.
No. 6 - Mary's Lullaby
Text: John Cowley
Sleep, my darling, sleep, my child.
Cattle are lowing, winds are blowing, stars are in the sky.
Holy babe upon my breast,
close thine eyes and calmly rest. Lullaby.
Sleep, my darling, sleep, my child.
Kings adore thee, bow before thee, humbly drawing near.
Holy angels fly above,
chanting songs of peace and love. Lullaby, dear.
Sleep, my darling, sleep, my child.
On this wonder, let me under, babe from heaven on high.
Thou, whom prophets did foretell,
Lord of Lords, Immanuel, on my arm dost lie. Lullaby.
No. 7 - Come, Singing Noel

Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas
arr. Logan Tiedt
Text: Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane
Have yourself a merry little Christmas, let your hear be light.
From now on our troubles will be out of sight.
Have yourself a merry little Christmas, make the yuletide gay.
From now on our troubles will be miles away.
Here we are as in olden days, happy golden days of yore.
Faithful friends who are dear to us, gather near to us once more.
Through the years we all will be together, if the fates allow.
Hang a shining star upon the highest bough.
And have yourself, a merry little Christmas now.

Joie de Vivre Community Choir (JDV) was founded in 2002 by Helga Anderson and Ann Lugsden as a program within the Division of Preparatory Studies at the Marcel A. Desautels Faculty of Music, University of Manitoba. In 2014 JDV established itself as a mainstay in the Winnipeg community choral landscape under the direction of John Tanner and since then the choir has been fortunate to call the Parish of St. John Brebeuf home. In 2018 Dr. Stuart Sladden began his tenure as the choir’s music director and in 2019 our apprentice conductor program was established; the post is now being held by Ruth Denton. JDV is a non-auditioned community choir that welcomes singers of all experience levels, so if you are interested in joining the choir please do not hesitate to be in touch with us, by speaking with Dr. Sladden or by sending us an email at [email protected]. Thank you so much for joining us today, our first live concert program in over two years! We wish you all a safe and happy holiday season and hope you will join us in the spring for our final concert of the season, details of which will be posted on our website soon, joiedevivrechoir.ca.
