This winter/spring the two choirs worked through a number of pieces to determine what our final performance project would be. After 8 pieces, 16 weeks, and 3 rounds of voting, we selected Jay Althouse's Homeward Bound. This heartfelt and elegant work has been a favourite of both choirs and audiences for many years. The song was originally written for a loved one of the composer who was embarking on a new phase of life's journey as a way of expressing the soul's yearning to grow and change. The pandemic has certainly provided choristers with ample opportunity to grow and change as we endeavoured, sometimes successfully and sometimes not, to navigate the challenges involved with virtual programming. Thank you all for walking this journey with us!

Due to the continued uncertainty regarding the pandemic, we decided to remain mostly virtual this semester. This festive project will feature three piece that we hope will put you in a festive spirit. The first piece is The Gift to Be Simple, a shaker tune widely attributed to Joseph Brackett, composed in 1848 and made popular by Aaron Copland in 1944. It has been arranged by many composers and the version we are doing is by Bob Chilcott. The second piece is a familiar Christmas text, In the Bleak Midwinter, set to a new tune by composer Robin Stopford. And finally, our last piece, A Recipe for Christmas Pudding, by John Whittaker, will help you with you Christmas baking! This is a poetic setting of the recipe found in Dr. Chase's Recipes or Information For Everybody, published in 1903.

The concert primarily features music that expresses the healing power singing has, a message that is important to hear amidst the ongoing pandemic. Puccini's Requiem is also featured in this program as a way for us to recognize the devastation of the pandemic and to hold a moment in our collective hearts for the victims of the virus and their families. This virtual concert is being dedicated in loving memory to Irene McKenzie (JDV) and Ted Mikliechuk (GNC). |
