We Are the Music Makers
Melissa Dunphy
We are the music makers,
And we are the dreamers of dreams,
Wandering by lone sea breakers,
And sitting by desolate streams.
World losers and world forsakers
On whom the pale moon gleams:
Yet we are the movers and shakers
Of the world forever, it seems.
With wonderful deathless ditties
We build up the world's great cities,
And out of a fabulous story
We fashion an empire's glory:
One with a dream, at pleasure,
Shall go forth and conquer a crown;
And three with a new song's measure
Can trample a kingdom down.
We are the music makers,
And we are the dreamers of dreams,
Wandering by lone sea breakers,
And sitting by desolate streams.
We, in the ages lying,
In the buried past of the earth,
Built Nineveh with our sighing
And Babel itself in our mirth;
And overthrew them with prophesying
To the old of the new world's worth;
For each age is a dream that is dying,
Or one that is coming to birth.
We are the music makers,
And we are the dreamers of dreams,
Wandering by lone sea breakers,
And sitting by desolate streams.
All Ye Who Music Love
Balthazar Donato
All ye who music love,
And would its pleasures prove:
O come to us who cease not daily,
From morn till eve to warble gaily:
Fa la la la....
Come, lads and lasses all,
Obey the tuneful call:
O come to us who cease not daily,
From morn till eve to warble gaily:
Fa la la la....
An die Musik (To Music)
Franz Schubert
Delightful Art in many a gloomy hour,
when I have bowed before the storms of life,
Hast Thou revived my heart with flowing power
in better realms unknown to earthly strife.
How oft the tones Thy golden heart did bear me,
The sweet accords that heavenward soar,
The heaven of better days has opened over me:
Delightful Art, my thanks to Thee for evermore.
If Music be the Food of Love
David C. Dickau
If music be the food of love,
Sing on till I am filled with joy;
For then my listening soul you move
To pleasures that can never cloy.
Your eyes, your mien, your tongue declare
That you are music everywhere.
Pleasures invade both eye and ear,
So fierce the transports are, they wound,
And all my senses feasted are,
Though yet the treat is only sound,
Sure I must perish by your charms,
Unless you save me in your arms.
After Music
Eric Barnum
I saw not they were strange, the ways I roam,
Until the music called, and called me thence,
And tears stirred in my heart as tears may come
To lonely children straying far from home,
Who know not how they wandered so, nor whence.
If I might follow far and far away
Unto the country where these songs abide,
I think my soul would wake and find it day,
Would tell me who I am, and why I stray,
Would tell me who I was before I died.
Music When Soft Voices Die
Sherrie Porterfield
Music, when soft voices die,
Vibrates in the memory;
Odours, when sweet violet sicken,
Live within the sense they quicken.
Rose leaves, when the rose is dead,
Are heaped for the beloved's bed;
And so thy thoughts, when thou art gone,
Love itself shall slumber on.
To Sing of Hopes and Dreams
Nancy Telfer
1: The Songs of Time
At the dawn of time
A young mother rocked her baby
In the first light of morning, the music began.
Through the ages the music grew
And soon became woven
Into the fabric of our lives.
Work song, singing games
Music for dancing
At funerals and feasts
Sings to pass on the history of the people
To the next generation
Songs of worship love and war.
Choirs and orchestras
And all kinds of bands
Added their music
To the sounds of the universe.
Music,
What a beautiful way to communicate
Music,
To life the spirit from pain
To celebrate the joy of existence.
And now, today, we watch it happen
Child becomes youth, youth becomes adult
And the music plays on.
Past, present, future - all connected
Vibrant with the songs of time
The songs of Time.
2: The Cultural Mosaic
The language of music
Displays itself in many tongues
Each culture sing its way into our hearts.
Oh, no more auction block for me
I'll give my love an apple without any core
Each culture remains distinct
Each piece has its own musical colour.
John Kanakanaka too rye-ay.
The songs of the First People's Nations
And the Inuit drums in the. north have a story to tell.
Each musical tongue speaks from its own experience
Tells us who we are
Reminds us of our won humanity.
Ensemble nous Charton la création.
(Together we sing of creation)
Ensemble nous chanton la chanson.
(Together we sing the song)
3: Reaching for the Future
Where will the winds of the future blow?
What dance will be danced?
What painting and photography or sculpture
Will brave the changing tides of time?
What kind of music will sound
For the mysterious journey of the whales
The majestic flight of the eagles
The parade of stars
In a black, black sky?
To eat, to drink, to laugh, to cry;
We cannot be separate from the world around us
We are a part of a huge network
Dancer, artist, actor, musician
Each one with an individual identity
Different perspectives linked by a love of the arts.
We are the music makers
We sing the hopes and the dreams of the people
Into the future we dance our dance
With the throb of a heart-beat.
The haunting flow of a melody
The rich heritage of harmony and counterpoint.
Into the future we dance our dance
Past the limits of space and time.
We are the music makers
We play the music - we sing the song.
Fa una canzona
Orazio Vecchi
(English Translation)
Make me a song without a single black note,
And in delight I'll sing you an exact quote.
Give it a lilt that to slumber will send me;
Sweet and gentle and quiet let the end be.
Don't make it harsh or similar abuse do:
Discordant noise my ears cannot get used to.
Give it a lilt that to slumber will send me;
Sweet and gentle and quiet let the end be.
Don't give it counterpoint or calculations:
More than all else, avoid these affectations.
Give it a lilt that to slumber will send me;
Sweet and gentle and quiet let the end be.
This is the style that fortunate Orfeo
Played in when Proserpina's heart he laid low.
Give it a lilt that to slumber will send me;
Sweet and gentle and quiet let the end be.
This is the style that comforts all who hear it
And sweetly soothed King Saul's contentious spirit!
Give it a lilt that to slumber will send me;
Sweet and gentle and quiet let the end be.

Joie de Vivre Community Choir (JDV) was founded in 2002 by Helga Anderson and Ann Lugsden as a program within the Division of Preparatory Studies at the Marcel A. Desautels Faculty of Music, University of Manitoba. In 2014 JDV established itself as a mainstay in the Winnipeg community choral landscape under the direction of John Tanner. In 2018, Dr. Stuart Sladden began his tenure as the choir’s music director and in 2019 our apprentice conductor program was established. Ruth Denton, our Assistant Conductor, joined the artistic team through that program in the fall of 2022. JDV is a non-auditioned community choir that welcomes singers of all experience levels, so if you are interested in joining the choir please do not hesitate to be in touch with us, by speaking with Dr. Sladden or by sending us an email at [email protected]. Thank you so much for joining us today for our first concert of the season, The Music Makers. We hope you have enjoyed the program as much as we have enjoyed sharing it with you. Stay tuned to our website, joiedevivrechoir.ca, for updates on our season programming and concerts.
