Hope Springs
Rob Redei (b. 1975)
In the void of silence passing through the weight of years
held in binding tethers of the past
visions of the future clouded by the haze of fears
yesterday's long shadow cast
going past, forging on, rising towards a coming dawn,
there's a hope that never dies.
Give yourself a chance to make the world all over
find another reason to believe
hear tomorrow's promise let it's light take over
grateful for the blessings we receive
praising the potential in all things
Hope Springs.
Hope still springs eternal rising from the human heart
in the grip of darkness joy takes flight
love still sings a song whenever loves first stirrings start
kindness is still love's delight
through the grief, through the strife,
there is joy, there is life, there's a hope that never dies.
Give yourself a chance to make the world all over
find another reason to believe
hear tomorrow's promise let it's light take over
grateful for the blessings we receive
Give yourself a chance to make the world all over
find another reason to believe
hear tomorrow's promise let it's light take over
grateful for the blessings we receive
in the dark the human heart still sings,
Hope Springs.
Verleih' uns Frieden
Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847)
Verleih uns Frieden gnädiglich,
Mercifully grant us peace,
Herr Gott, zu unsern Zeiten.
Lord God, in our times.
Es ist doch ja kein andrer nicht,
For there is no other
der für uns könnte streiten,
Who could fight for us
denn du, unser Gott, alleine.
But you alone, our God.
Requiem
Sir John Rutter (b. 1945)
1. Requiem aeternam
Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine:
Grant them eternal rest, O Lord,
et lux perpetua luceat eis.
and may light eternal shine upon them.
Te decet hymnus Deus in Sion,
It is fitting that a hymn should be raised unto Thee in Sion
et tibi reddetur votum in Jerusalem:
and a vow paid to Thee in Jerusalem:
Exaudi orationem meam,
give ear to my prayer, O Lord,
ad te omnis caro veniet.
unto Thee all flesh shall come at last.
Kyrie, eleison!
Lord, have mercy!
Christe, eleison!
Christ, have mercy!
Kyrie, eleison!
Lord, have mercy!
2. Out of the deep
Out of the deep have I called unto thee, O Lord:Lord, hear my voice.
O let thine ears consider well:
the voice of my complaint.
If thou, Lord, wilt be extreme to mark what is done
amiss: O Lord, who may abide it?
For there is mercy with thee:
therefore shalt thou be feared.
I look for the Lord; my soul doth wait for him:
in his word is my trust.
My soul fleeth unto the Lord:
before the morning watch,
I say, before the morning watch.
O Israel, trust in the Lord,
for with the Lord there is mercy:
and with him is plenteous redemption.
And he shall redeem Israel: from all his sins.
3. Pie Jesu
Pie Jesu Domine, dona eis requiem,
Blessed Lord Jesus, grant them rest,
Pie Jesu Domine, dona eis requiem,
Blessed Lord Jesus, grant them rest,
Pie Jesu Domine, dona eis requiem, sempiternam.
Blessed Lord Jesus, grant them eternal rest.
4. Sanctus
Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus, Dominus Deus Sabaoath
Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and majesty.
Pleni sunt caeli et terra gloria tua.
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in excelsis.
Hosanna in the highest.
Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord our God:
Hosanna in excelsis.
Hosanna in the highest.
5. Agnus Dei
Agnus Dei, qui tollis pecatta mundi:
Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world,
dona eis requiem.
grant them rest.
Man that us born of a woman
hath but a short time to live, and is full of misery.
He cometh up, and is cut down like a flower;
he fleeth as it were a shadow.
Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi:
Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world,
dona eis requiem.
grant them rest.
In the midst of life, we are in death:
of whom may we seek for succour?
Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi.
Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world,
dona eis requiem.
grant them rest.
I am the resurrection and the life, saith the Lord:
he that believeth in me, though he were dead,
yet shall he live:
and whosoever liveth and believeth in me
shall never die.
6. The Lord Is My Shepherd
The Lord is my shepherd:
therefore can I lack nothing.
He shall feed me in a green pasture:
and lead me forth beside the waters of comfort.
He shall convert my soul:
and bring me forth in the paths of righteousness,
for his Name's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil:
for Thou art with me;
Thy rod and thy staff comfort me.
Thou shalt prepare a table before me against them
that trouble me:
Thou hast anointed my head with oil,
and my cup shall be full.
But thy loving-kindness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life:
and I will dwell in the house of the
Lord for ever.
7. Lux aeterna
I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me.
Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord,
for they rest from their labours:
even so saith the Sprit.
Lux aeterna luceat eis Domine:
Let eternal light shine upon them, O Lord:
Cum sanctis tuis in aeternum, quia pius es.
with Thy saints for ever, for art merciful.
Requiem aeternam dona eis Domine,
Grant them eternal rest, O Lord,
et lux perpetua luceat eis.
and may light perpetual shine on them,

Joie de Vivre Community Choir (JDV) was founded in 2002 by Helga Anderson and Ann Lugsden as a program within the Division of Preparatory Studies at the Marcel A. Desautels Faculty of Music, University of Manitoba. In 2014 JDV established itself as a mainstay in the Winnipeg community choral landscape under the direction of John Tanner and since then the choir has been fortunate to call the Parish of St. John Brebeuf home. In 2018 Dr. Stuart Sladden began his tenure as the choir’s music director and in 2019 our apprentice conductor program was established. Ruth Denton, our Assistant Conductor, joined the artistic team through that program in the fall of 2022. JDV is a non-auditioned community choir that welcomes singers of all experience levels, so if you are interested in joining the choir please do not hesitate to be in touch with us, by speaking with Dr. Sladden or by sending us an email at [email protected]. Thank you so much for joining us today for our Fall 2025 program, We Remember. We hope you have enjoyed the program as much as we have enjoyed sharing it with you. Stay tuned to our website, joiedevivrechoir.ca, for some exciting announcements about our coming seasons.
